Unpopular Opinions as a Balloon Decorator

I've saved these up for a while, it's about time I do a blog post about it. Haha! As a balloon decorator, I've been in the industry long enough to develop a few opinions that may not align with what everyone else thinks. While I understand that each decorator has their unique approach and preferences, here are some of my unpopular opinions on what works (and doesn’t work) in the balloon décor business. Ready for a little debate? Let’s dive in.

1. I Don’t Use Shine Products

This might ruffle a few feathers, but I’m not a fan of shine products. Whether it’s the shiny finish on certain balloons or sprays that claim to make them sparkle, I just don’t see the need. While I know these products can add a glossy touch, I prefer the natural beauty of a well-made balloon. Sometimes less is more, and I’d rather focus on quality and design rather than trying to enhance the finish with a shine product.

2. I Don’t Spend Hours Trying to Color Match

Another unpopular opinion: I don’t obsess over perfect color matching. Sure, if a client has a very specific shade of blue they want for a corporate event logo or something like that, I’ll do my best to match it. But in general, I don’t waste hours trying to perfectly match colors. There are so many beautiful, pre-made shades available from quality balloon manufacturers, so instead of stressing about finding an exact match, I work with what I have and offer options from my color chart. It saves time and makes things more efficient.

3. I Don’t Double Stuff My Balloons

I know this might sound controversial, but I don’t double stuff my balloons. There’s a lot of time and effort that goes into double stuffing, and I think it’s unnecessary. Balloon manufacturers provide so many beautiful colors and variations, so why go through all the trouble of combining two different balloons just to get the perfect shade? If you invest in high-quality balloons, you’ll have more than enough options to get the look you're going for. Why complicate it?

4. Not Every Party Needs an Elaborate Balloon Display

This one might be a hard pill to swallow for some, but not every event needs an elaborate, oversized balloon display. Sometimes, a few simple decorations or a DIY balloon garland is more than enough. I believe in giving clients options that fit their needs. Not every party needs to be extravagant, especially when the balloons might only be up for a few hours. DIYers aren't ruining the industry, but decorators who charge outrageous prices for over-the-top displays are pushing people toward DIY solutions. Let's be realistic about what’s necessary for the event and not overdo it just to drive up costs.

5. Classic Decor is Better Than Organic

Don’t get me wrong—I love a good organic balloon garland, but in my opinion, classic balloon décor often outshines it. Why? Because classic decor is easier to execute, requires less time, and is often a bigger money maker. Plus, it’s perfect for all types of events. However, achieving professional-looking classic decor does require some knowledge—especially when it comes to framing and rigging. With proper training and technique, classic designs can be just as stunning as those organic garlands, and sometimes they’re even more timeless.

6. Balloon Garlands Aren’t the End-All-Be-All of the Balloon Industry

Here’s an unpopular opinion for you: selling balloon garlands does not make you a "balloon artist." I’m sure some people might take offense to this, but I believe that just stringing balloons together doesn't necessarily define someone as a true artist in the balloon world. Balloon décor is about creativity, design, and making something that adds value to an event. While balloon garlands can be stunning, it’s important to offer more than just that one service to build a sustainable business.

7. The Balloons From Amazon Are Fine – But "Fine" Isn’t Enough

I get it. Sometimes you’re in a pinch, and Amazon’s quick shipping is tempting. But here’s the thing: the balloons you get from Amazon, while decent, are often "fine" at best. Why settle for "fine" when you can have gorgeous, high-quality balloons from trusted manufacturers? Decorator-quality balloons have better shapes, colors, and durability, and they’re so much more reliable for professional events. Plus, they don’t stink. If you know, you know. Don’t settle for anything less than the best.

8. Stop Overcomplicating Balloon Design

Another unpopular opinion: I think decorators often overcomplicate their designs. You don’t always need a complicated, intricate setup to create something beautiful. Simple, elegant designs can be just as impactful as the elaborate ones. Focus on the basics—clean lines, balanced arrangements, and good quality balloons. Sometimes, less is more. Don’t feel pressured to overdo it just because you think that’s what clients expect. The beauty of balloons lies in their versatility, but simplicity often speaks the loudest.

Final Thoughts

The balloon décor industry is full of trends, opinions, and diverse practices, and that’s what makes it exciting. But these are some of the unpopular opinions I hold in the industry. While I know not everyone will agree with me, I firmly believe that it’s important to focus on what works best for your business, your clients, and your creativity. If you’re a balloon decorator, don’t be afraid to form your own opinions and stick to what works for you. The industry is constantly evolving, but staying true to your values and what you believe in is what will set you apart.
